DMCA and copyright

How copyright and trademarks work on GPL 247, and how to tell us if you think something here infringes your rights.

Last updated 24 October 2026

The short version

  • Most products are distributed under the GNU GPL, which lets anyone share them, including for a fee.
  • Some files may have their own licence, such as images, fonts or stock photos. If you own one and it shouldn’t be here, tell us.
  • Send a notice with the details below and we’ll act promptly.

The GPL and copyright

Why can GPL 247 distribute these products?

WordPress is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and the plugins and themes built for it are generally distributed under the GPL or a compatible licence. The GPL lets anyone use, change and share the code, including for a fee, as long as it stays under the same licence.

Does the GPL cover everything in a product?

Not always. A product’s code is usually under the GPL, but some include separate files with their own licence, such as images, fonts, photos, icons or design files. We take claims about those files seriously.

Why are other companies’ names on the site?

Product and developer names are trademarks of their owners. We use them only to say what a product is. GPL 247 isn’t connected with the developers, and using their names doesn’t mean they approve of us. If you think we’ve used your trademark in a misleading way, tell us.

Reporting infringement

What should my notice include?

  • Your name, and your physical or electronic signature.
  • The work you say is being infringed.
  • The material on our site, with a link to each product page.
  • How to contact you: address, phone number and email.
  • A statement that you believe in good faith the use isn’t authorised by you, your agent or the law.
  • A statement that the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you own the right or may act for its owner.

Where do I send it?

Send it through our contact page, with “Copyright notice” in the subject.

What happens next?

We acknowledge notices within 2 working days and review each one. If a notice is valid, we remove the material or disable access to it, and tell you when we have. If we believe a file is covered by the GPL, we’ll explain why and show you where its licence is.

Which law do you follow?

We follow the notice-and-takedown process in the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512). You can send a notice from any country, and it doesn’t need to mention a particular law.

What if a notice is false?

Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly misrepresents that material infringes can be liable for the damage it causes. If you’re not sure whether something infringes your rights, get legal advice first.

Counter-notices

Something was removed by mistake. What can I do?

If you’re the developer or have the right to the material, send a counter-notice through our contact page. Include the material that was removed and where it was, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe it was removed by mistake, your contact details, consent to the jurisdiction of the appropriate court, and your signature. We’ll pass it to the person who sent the original notice.

For customers

What happens if a product I downloaded is removed?

It stops being available to download or update from the store. The GPL rights you have for code you’ve already downloaded stay with you. If we’re told that a separate file, such as an image, wasn’t licensed for sharing, we may let customers who downloaded it know so they can replace it.
